Workshop-ohjaajat: Idham ”Budi” Budiman ja Patsy Hayward!

Budi is a percussionist, singer and songwriter who was born and raised in multicultural Singapore and relocated to Helsinki, Finland in 2017. He was one of the founders of Wicked Aura, a 13 piece bloco formed in 2003 that helped popularised Samba in Singapore which later evolved into a rock/funk band with the batucada very much intact. Among the band’s achievement is a Budi penned song called “Fight”, a fiery blend of Maracatu rhythms with heavy guitars, Balinese Kechak chants and abrasive vocals, made the BBC’s Next Big Thing (2007) list of artists to look out for. The band have backed Brazilian artist Chico Cesar, opened for The Black Eyed Peas and shared festival bills with artists from a broad spectrum of music which included the likes of Robert Plant, The Foo Fighters, Femi Kuti, Beija-Flor, The Beastie Boys, Jimmy Cliff and The Dhol Foundation. Budi was given the role of musical director (2004-2017) of Samba Masala.

The group have performed in the US, Ireland, England, Malaysia, Taiwan and Germany. After moving to Helsinki, he co-founded Samba Sinestesia with a bunch of kindred spirits from the Helsinki samba scene. The band’s sound reflects his eclectic taste in music and his penchant for deconstruction and adaptation of genres whilst being rooted in the Samba swing and traditions. One can find Breakbeats, Samba, Maracatu, Comparsa, DJ Shadow, Tower Of Power or Slipknot in Sinestesia’s rhythmic arrangements if they listen hard enough.Budi has facilitated workshops all over the world alongside Mestre Fred Turuka of the London School of Samba. He also conducts his brand of Samba teambuilding workshops (which he dubbed Steambuilding) for corporate entities around Finland; all in between being a first grade teacher, playing drums for a metal band, singing jazz standards and being a father of two boys.

Patsy, from London School of Samba, was introduced to samba at 8yrs old at Notting Hill Carnival in 2000. After that, she has attended every Notting Hill Carnival since. In 2014 Patsy started to train in samba more intensely and has dabbled with tamborim/chocalho.

Patsy is a lover of many dance and music styles, but most of all Brazilian samba. Samba rejuvenates her body and soul and she’s passionate about teaching others how to experience samba’s euphoric highs.

Most of Patsy’s youth (since age 6) was spent training in the technical dance forms of ballet, pointe, jazz, tap and modern, with the Royal Academy of Dance and ISTD examination boards.

Patsy has participated in various alas (sections), taught performance group, and was crowned Rainha da Bateria in 2015, where she paraded alongside the amazing Carlinhos do Salgueiro. In 2019 she won second place in Coburg Carnaval’s Queen Competition.

In 2016, she started working as a professional freelance samba dancer across the UK and as a member of various UK samba groups.

She also has co-conducted dance workshops for samba schools in Denmark, Finland and Sweden (A Bunda, Império do Papagaio, União da Roseira, Samba Carioca, Poco Loco). In addition to teaching, Patsy choreographed and led the Commissão de Frente for London school of Samba 2019 and for the last 4 years she’s gratefully held the title of Musa and continues to proudly represent her school.

She is so thankful to samba and the samba community for all the joy, love and passion they’ve brought to life. She (like all of us) couldn’t imagine life without samba. It’s more than just a dance or a song… it’s a celebration of life!
