Carnival is the best-known aspect of Brazilian life, a five-day extravaganza, free-for-all during which people don masks, shed inhibitions and social identities, and engage in flamboyant behavior.
Business, school, and other normal daily activities cease. Bands of ordinary people, many dressed in costumes, take to the streets to dance, sing, and drink. The poor man is king, the rich mingle with common folk, men dress as women, women act with masculine audacity, monsters walk around the streets and are greeted with a smile.
Carnival is a legitimate source of Brazil’s national pride. This uniquely Brazilian blend of music, dance, and pageantry rightfully lays claim to being the ”Greatest Show on Earth”
